Interval Training is the best way to lose extra pounds and get into excellent shape in the minimum amount of time.

Interval Training combines periods of lower intensity workouts, called rest periods, with short periods of intense activity, called intervals. Believe it or not, this type of exercise actually burns more energy than workouts using a constant intensity or speed; according to the American College of Sports Medicine. Twenty minutes of a properly executed interval training workout is about equal to 45 minutes of a constant speed workout.

Other than being a great way to lose weight and get into good physical condition relatively fast, interval training eliminates the boredom of exercise. You are constantly doing something a little different every few minutes. It is the changing of your heart rate every few minutes that burns more calories and gets you into great physical shape fast.

Interval Training is the best exercise to lose weight.

Walking On A Treadmill

Walk at your normal pace for 1.5 minutes. Then, either raise the incline or walk at a faster pace for 1 minute. Walk at zero incline or at your normal pace for 1.5 minutes, and then go back to the more intense walking for 1 minute. Repeat this cycle for a maximum 20 minute workout.

My personal treadmill workout alternates between walking at 4 mph for 1.5 minutes and running at 6 mph for 1 min. I repeat this cycle for a maximum 20 minute workout.

Running

Run at your normal pace for 1.5 minutes. Run faster for 1 minute. Go back to your normal pace for 1.5 minutes, and then increase your speed for 1 minute. Repeat this cycle for a maximum 20 minute workout.

Sprinting

After a warm-up period, run full out for 100 yards. Walk a hundred yards, and then run full out for a 100 yards. Repeat this cycle for a maximum 20 minute
workout.

Uphill Sprinting

If you have a hill nearby, run up the hill as fast as you can. Then walk down the hill. Repeat this cycle for a maximum 20 minute workout.

Rowing

If you have access to a rowing machine, rowing is a great full body workout. Try doing 2 minutes of intense rowing followed by 1 minute of rest. Keep your workouts to a maximum of 20 minutes.

You can do intervals with other exercises such as elliptical trainers, swimming, cycling, indoor cycling, stair climbing and jumping rope, just to name a few. You can also adjust the periods between intervals and rest periods to suit your own taste and physical requirements.

I have really enjoyed switching to interval training in my fitness program. The time truly goes by faster, and the workouts are more enjoyable. I also feel and look physically stronger.

So, what is the best exercise to lose weight? My vote is definitely Interval Training.
