Turmeric Tea

Turmeric is a spice that makes yellow mustard bright yellow. It has a warm, peppery taste, and makes a great tea.

The main component of turmeric, curcumin, has healthy anti-inflammatory properties. When it teams up with vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli, it has been shown to help prevent colon and prostate cancers.

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties has been reported to provide relief to rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Curcumin in turmeric neutralizes the free radicals that cause joint inflammation and damage.

Some studies have also found that turmeric may provide some protection against Alzheimer’s Disease. Studies have demonstrated that curcumin blocks the accumulation of plaque in Alzheimer prone rats. The compound also appears to reduce inflammation related to the Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin also appears to improve memory.

If you also add ginger to your turmeric tea, you get another anti-inflammatory compound that also provides some cancer protection. Gingerols, the main
active compound in ginger, has bee shown to provide protection against colorectal and ovarian cancers.

Here is how to make 1 serving of Turmeric Tea:

  • Bring 1 cup of water to boil
  • Add ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric and ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger to boiling water
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes
  • Strain the tea (optional). I personally don't strain my tea.  
  • Add honey and/or lemon to taste (optional). To reduce calories, use Stevia to sweeten the tea rather than honey.
  • To smooth the taste, you can add just a drop of vanilla extract to the tea.
